She stood opposite Daniel Mannew on Miller’s Knob at the peak of the Great North Mountain. Mannew, his back to a fathomless drop, was rigid as she leveled her Glock at him, his hands held at his sides, his handgun pointed at the ground.

The handgun that had shot Hawk only moments before.

Terror streaked through her at the thought of her dog being injured, or worse. She didn’t know how badly he was hurt or where he was, but his whine of pain still echoed in her head.

“Mr. Mannew, it’s not too late. Put down the weapon and we can work this out.”

“You know who it’s too late for?” The gun clutched in his hand started to vibrate. “It’s too late for you—”

Hawk burst from the bushes with a snarl, launching himself at Mannew’s gun hand, his teeth bared. He latched on, grinding bone and sinew, Mannew screaming in agony. The gun went off as they struggled, the bullet striking the earth halfway between Mannew and herself. Mannew grabbed a fistful of Hawk’s fur as the dog jerked his wrist right, then left, until the gun went flying. But then, in trying to fight off the snarling dog, Mannew lost his balance and staggered backward toward the edge of the abyss. One step . . . two . . . three . . .

And they were gone.

“HAWK! ”
